Many Suffolk families who homeschool under the religious exemption option were shocked when they received a letter from a school official asking them to submit an annual assessment. Only families homeschooling under the notice of intent option are required to submit an assessment.

After Home School Legal Defense Association members alerted us to the problem, our legal staff called the school official responsible for the mix-up.

The official explained the letter had accidentally been mailed to all homeschooling families instead of just the families operating under the home instruction option. Heapologized and assured us that it would not happen again.

Families homeschooling under the religious exemption option should simply ignore the letter they received.
