Sheriff Reaches Settlement with Family over Tasering

An HSLDA member family in Missouri has agreed to accept a settlement offer from a sheriff and police captain who forced their way into the family’s home in September 2011.

In November 2014, HSLDA filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Hagans alleging that the officers unlawfully forced their way into the Hagans’ home, and subdued them with pepper spray and a Taser. The lawsuit alleged that the officers violated the Hagans’ Fourth Amendment right to privacy in their home and to be free from excessive force and unreasonable seizures.

After protracted negotiations, both the officers and the Hagans have agreed to settle the case out of court. With the case closed, the Hagans will be able to turn the page on this chapter of their lives.
