Wage Discrimination Ends When HSLDA Intervenes

A Southwest Missouri member placed his son in a program in a Missouri Career Center program that provided wage incentives for high school aged students who maintain a specified grade point average.

When the family requested that their child be allowed to receive the wage incentive, the administrator said the agency could only provide a grade incentive for students who are homeschooled “in a state-approved curriculum and program.”

Explaining the Law

The family asked for help. HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott A. Woodruff wrote the administrator and explained that the state approves neither the curriculum nor the program that a particular homeschool family uses. Woodruff confirmed that family’s program was in compliance with Missouri law and pointed out that state policy favors equal treatment of homeschool students.

The administrator wrote back and allowed the student to participate in the incentive program.
