Lincoln County Attempts to Force Homeschoolers to Register

Last June the Lincoln County Board of Education sent a letter, and additional paperwork entitled "Home School Registration Form," to homeschoolers in the county. Of course, in Kentucky, homeschoolers are not required to "register" with anyone. The form also requests information that the school district is not legally authorized to demand, such as the child's date of birth, phone number, and the name of the curriculum used for the child. Kentucky Revised Statutes Annotated § 159.160 only allows school districts to ask for the names, ages, and places of residence of the pupils in attendance at the school.

HSLDA sent a letter on behalf of homeschooling families to the Director of Pupil Personnel, informing him of the errors in the form and requesting that he make the necessary changes to bring the form into line with the law. Since there is no specific form required under Kentucky law HSLDA provides a form that members can use to submit the information required within the first two weeks of school.
