Media Breakthrough: Taiwanese Newspapers Highlight Homeschoolers
By Tim Chen
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, some 1,500 students between the ages of 6 and 15 were homeschooled in 2010. While the number is small compared to the 2.5 million school-age students in Taiwan, homeschool families are very vocal and active under the leadership of Tim Chen, the leader of Taiwan Homeschool Advocates (THA). Chen has been organizing monthly gatherings for homeschool families since 2007. These events are called “Second Tuesday,” as they take place on the second Tuesday of each month. In addition, THA hosted 160 homeschool parents and children for the 2010 Taipei International Homeschool Christmas party on December 14. The event was held at Polar Bear Ice World, a newly opened ice skating rink in downtown Taipei. Attendees included students and parents from Denmark, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the United States. Almost all of Taiwan’s national newspapers carried reports of the event, accompanied by large photographs taken at the party.
