Take Action Against UN Disabilities Treaty During July 4 Recess

HSLDA President Mike Smith has been an advocate for homeschooling for more than 30 years.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

On June 12, we reported that the dangerous UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is back. Yesterday, we received confirmation from our friends in the U.S. Senate that the treaty will definitely come up for a vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sometime in July, after the Independence Day recess.

The Senate will be on recess the entire first week of July in celebration of Independence Day. This means that all 100 senators will return to their home states. We encourage you to contact your senators and find out if they will hold any town hall meetings near where you live. If so, please try to attend and urge your senators to reject the UNCRPD. You can also ask their staff if you could meet personally with your senators at their district offices.

To find out if there will be any town hall meetings with your senators, or to set up a meeting with them at their district offices, you can call your senators via the Capitol Hill Switchboard at 202-224-3121. You can also visit their web pages, or find them through HSLDA’s Legislative Toolbox.

You can find HSLDA’s materials on the UNCRPD, and also read the treaty for yourself. If you would like assistance from HSLDA’s federal relations team in preparing for a town hall or a meeting with your senator, please contact us at federalrelations@hslda.org or 540-338-5600.

HSLDA opposes this United Nations treaty because it says “in all actions concerning children with disabilities, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.” If ratified by the Senate, government officials could use this section to override parents’ decisions for their child with a disability.

Other provisions of the UNCRPD threaten U.S. sovereignty and our fundamental right to govern ourselves, promote abortion rights, and require a national registry of all children with disabilities (the term “disability” isn’t even defined).

We have beaten this treaty before, and by standing together for our God-given freedom, we can defeat this treaty again. If you are not a member of HSLDA, we urge you to join today to help us fight for you and your family’s freedom from the United Nations.

For liberty,

Mike Smith
President, HSLDA
