Calls needed on Two Bills Affecting Homeschoolers

Homeschooling in Pennsylvania.

Help defend educational freedom.

Senior Counsel Dee Black answers questions and assists members with legal issues. He and his wife homeschooled their children.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

On Wednesday, June 4, at 9:30 a.m., the Pennsylvania House Education Committee is scheduled to vote on two bills directly affecting home educators. The first is House Bill 1013, which would improve the homeschool law by removing public school superintendents from the evaluation of portfolios and requiring that homeschool diplomas issued by parents be recognized by the Commonwealth. The second is House Bill 2037, which would raise the compulsory school attendance age from 17 to 18. This increase in age would apply even to students who had graduated from a home education program unless it was accredited. Your calls and emails to members of the House Education Committee are needed to pass HB 1013 and defeat HB 2037.

Action Requested

(1) Please call or email (both would be better) members of the House Education Committee with this message or something similar in your own words:

“Please vote for House Bill 1013 without any amendments. It would improve the homeschool law of Pennsylvania by removing the unnecessary double evaluation of home education programs and requiring that homeschool diplomas be recognized by the Commonwealth.”

“Please vote against House Bill 2037, which would raise the compulsory attendance age from 17 to 18. This bill restricts the right of parents to choose when a child may pursue other educational or work options. Requiring the attendance of students who are unwilling to remain in school beyond age 17 will also have a disruptive effect on other students’ learning.”
