Please Call Governor LePage to Stop Government Preschools
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Last week, the Maine Senate and House gave their approval to LD 1530. The bill no longer places mandates on 5-year-olds. But it establishes the ways and the means for every school district to offer free preschool to 4-year-olds. This creates the perfect setup for parents who might not know the facts, in a moment of weakness, to put their precious 4-year-olds in daytime institutionalization.
The research is clear: the best place for little kids is at home with their families. Home is a rich environment where kids interact with loving family members in ways that help them grow socially, emotionally and academically—in ways that can’t be orchestrated or mimicked in impersonal institutional settings.
But there is a push to suck 4-year-olds out of their homes. Their strategy is to offer free (i.e., taxpayer-funded or gambling-funded) daytime institutionalization everywhere.
If the governor signs LD 1530, the government propaganda apparatus will be activated to convince parents how wonderful it is to put their 4-year-olds in preschool. The facts—the years of research—will be buried under a barrage of simplistic media “feel good” messages.
Please call the governor’s office, and urge him to veto LD 1530 when it reaches his desk. A veto will send the bill back to the legislature where it will need a two-thirds vote in each house to pass.
Let’s stop this slow-moving train wreck now! Your phone call can make the difference!
Please call Governor LePage right away at 1-855-721-5203. Your message can be as simple as, “Please vote NO on LD 1530. The research shows that the richest environment for 4-year-olds is their homes.”
Or you can develop a personal message from this article that summarizes the most important research on the issue.
This link provides 38 bullet points explaining why early education is bad for kids, or at best, why the gains from early education simply evaporate after a couple of years.
This HSLDA article provides additional important background.
If free preschool for 4-year-olds is established everywhere in Maine, it will make it easier for a future legislature to lower the age of compulsory education. Some jurisdictions have already tried to lower the age of compulsory education to 3 years of age!
Homeschoolers of Maine stands with HSLDA in opposing LD 1530.
Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
