Calls Urgently Needed
to Pass Religious Freedom Bill

Homeschooling in Mississippi

Contact your legislators today.

Senior Counsel Dee Black answers questions and assists members with legal issues. He and his wife homeschooled their children.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

The bill that would create the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is on life support, and time is running out. Your calls and/or emails to members of the Legislature this afternoon and tomorrow are urgently needed to pass this bill before time runs out for it on Monday. RFRA is legislation that would ensure that an individual’s right of free exercise of religion is protected by the highest legal standard. This bill also contains the requirement that the seal of the State of Mississippi include the language, “In God We Trust.”

RFRA passed the Senate by a vote of 48-0, but thanks to the lobbying efforts of the ACLU and others, the version passed by the House does nothing more than create a study committee to determine whether there is any need to pass such a law. As a result, this bill is being considered in conference by representatives of both the House and Senate in an effort to reach a compromise. But the version passed by the Senate is the only one that protects religious freedom.

Members of the legislature need to know that the citizens of Mississippi want the protections of the RFRA. If they don’t hear from you before Monday, this bill will most likely die.

Action Requested

1. Please call and/or email your state representative and state senator with this message or something similar in your own words:

“Please vote for the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which would ensure that an individual’s right of free exercise of religion is protected by the highest legal standard.”

When contacting your legislators, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. This issue is broader than homeschooling.

You can find your state representative’s contact information online.

You can find your state senator’s contact information online.

2. Please forward this email to every family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact their state representative and state senator about this bill.

Please call or email today!
