Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Every year several bills come up in the Washington Legislature that could impact homeschool freedom or your parental rights. So far this year we have urged you to support a parental rights bill, House Bill 2174. This bill would protect the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. We are also tracking (and opposing) House Bill 1283, which would lower the compulsory school attendance age in Washington from 8 to 6. Many of you have made calls on behalf these bills and others that we are currently tracking, and we appreciate it. But there is more that you can do! Come to the Home Educators’ Day at the Capitol on Monday, February 24!

We believe it is important for you to set aside one day in your home education program to help protect the freedom that you enjoy in Washington state to teach your children at home. Please consider coming to this event and joining hundreds of other homeschoolers in Olympia. There is still time for you to pre-register and to come to the 2014 Day at the Capitol! The registration packet can be found online.

Every single day you have the freedom to teach your children what they need as you prepare them for the rest of their life. You have that freedom because Washington state currently protects home-based education programs. For instance, the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) specifically states that homeschool parents “shall be subject only to those minimum state laws and regulations which are necessary to insure that a sufficient basic education opportunity is provided to the children receiving such instruction.” RCW § 28A.200.020.

The best way for you to help protect homeschool freedom in Washington is to attend the Day at the Capitol on February 24, 2014. Having vibrant homeschool families flood Olympia on the Day at the Capitol event has a lasting impression on your legislators! We want these men and women who represent you in the Capitol to remember your family, and hundreds of others, when homeschool issues come up for years to come.

In addition to helping protect homeschool freedom in Washington state, the Home Educators’ Day at the Capitol event is packed with special speakers, workshops, tours of the Capitol building and much more. These events will provide a unique educational experience for your family’s homeschool program.

To pre-register for the Homeschool Day at the Capitol event and get more information please click here. This vital event wouldn’t be possible without the tireless work from Christian Homeschool Network of Washington (CHN) and the support of Christian Heritage Home Educators of Washington.

CHN works extremely hard monitoring legislation and keeping up relationships with legislators. Without CHN, HSLDA would have a much harder time monitoring legislation in Washington. While the Homeschool Day at the Capitol event is free, a $15 donation to CHN is strongly encouraged to help them with the costs of this event. If you can give more, please do so.

Requested Action

  1. Come to Olympia on February 24, 2014, to participate in Home Educators’ Day at the Capitol.
  2. If you can’t make it to the Home Education Day at the Capitol, please pray for the event and consider giving to CHN and support this event. You can do so by clicking here.
  3. Feel free to pass this email on to your homeschool friends!

Last year several hundred homeschoolers showed up for Home Educators’ Day at the Capitol. Bring your family and help make this year’s event even bigger. We would like a large turnout to help demonstrate that the movement for home education freedom in Washington is alive and strong!

If you are not yet a member of HSLDA and would like to help us fight for greater parental rights and homeschool freedom in Washington please click here.

If you would like to be put on our email list to receive vital e-lerts you may sign up here.

Thank you for your part in fighting for freedom in Washington!
