Act Today: Religious Freedom in the Balance

Homeschooling in Maine

Help protect freedom of religion.

Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff answers questions and assists members with legal issues in your state. He and his wife homeschooled their children.

Dear Maine HSLDA Members and Friends:

Sadly, the US Supreme Court right now treats religious freedom like a second-class citizen. It gives other fundamental freedoms—like the freedom of speech, the right to assemble, freedom of the press—far more protection.

But Maine citizens have an opportunity this week to assure that—in the courts of the State of Maine—the right to exercise one’s religion is given equal status with other fundamental rights.

This is what LD 1428 will do if enacted.  If you agree that religious freedom should not be given second-class treatment, please act immediately.  The Maine senate could vote on LD 1428 this Thursday!

1. Before Thursday, please contact the Maine state senators listed below. Their votes will be crucial.  Your message can be as simple as, “Please vote yes on LD 1428. Protect religious freedom the same way we protect other fundamental rights.” It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler since this bill will protect all people of faith.

2. If one of the senators below is your own senator, be sure to mention that!  Use our legislative toolbox if you aren't sure who your senator is.

Senator Troy Jackson- phone: 436-0763 (prefers phone calls)

Senator Margaret Craven- phone: 783-1897 email: SenMargaret.Craven@legislature.maine.gov

Senator Anne Haskell- phone: 871-5808 email: annehask@maine.rr.com

Senator Edward Mazurek- phone: 542-0017 email: EdMazurek1@aol.com

Senator John Patrick- (prefers emails) email: JohnPat2000@hotmail.com

Senator David Dutremble- phone: 229-6587 email: SenDavid.Dutremble@legislature.maine.gov

Senator John Tuttle- phone: 838-3013 email: SenJohn.Tuttle@legislature.maine.gov

See our earlier elerts for background information.  Eighteen states already have stepped forward to treat religious freedom at a similar level with our other most important freedoms.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
