Action Needed to Oppose Federally Controlled Testing

Homeschooling in Michigan

Call or email today.

HSLDA staff attorney Mike Donnelly helps protect homeschool freedom in your community.

Dear Michigan Members and Friends,

The Michigan Legislature is holding a joint committee meeting to hear the Michigan Department of Education’s report on federally funded and controlled SMARTER tests. Your support is needed to oppose the further implementation of the SMARTER test regimen.

The SMARTER tests are federally controlled and encourage teachers to “teach to the test” and use curriculum that aligns with the test standards. If these tests are adopted, they will strongly discourage the use of any curriculum that is not specifically aligned to the federal standards. The SMARTER tests are a foot in the door of federally controlled education standards.

Action Requested

Please contact members of the Joint Committee and give them the following message in your own words:

“Please oppose the Common Core Standards and federally controlled SMARTER tests. These tests facilitate the increasing federalization of education with the potential to infringe the liberty of all parents to direct the education of their children. The SMARTER tests encourage teachers to ‘teach to the test’ and create a de-facto national curriculum based around the tests. SMARTER testing requirements undermine local control of education. Please oppose the SMARTER testing requirements.”

You can contact members of the Joint Committee using the following contact information.

Can You Look at the Clouds and Tell the Direction of the Wind?

An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we’re there to protect your family.
