Dear Indiana Members and Friends,

As we have previously reported, several legislators in Indiana have introduced a bill that would allow Hoosiers to be heard on the Common Core State Standards initiative (CCSS) in Indiana. Today there will be a rally at 1 p.m. at the Capitol. The rally will be held on the third floor atriums in the Indiana Statehouse. For more information about visiting the statehouse and to check out maps and parking information click here.

Representative Rhonda Rhoads has been pushing a Senate-approved proposal to hold public hearings on the Common Core State Standards initiative and to have a fiscal study done of the potential impact of implementation of CCSS in Indiana. Now House Bill 1427 is back in the House, and we understand the bill could be brought up for a vote. We still need your help make this happen.

While the CCSS do not directly impact homeschooling, there are many ways in which homeschooling freedom could be indirectly impacted. The main concern for homeschooling families regarding the CCSS initiative is that it is another step towards nationalizing curriculum and instruction that could limit our freedom to education our children as we see fit.

If you have not yet called in support of House Bill 1427, please do so now! Urge your representative to support HB 1427 and ask Speaker Bosma to allow the bill to be heard. Come to the Capitol at 1 p.m. today, if you can.

Requested Action

1. Come to the Indiana Capitol and take part in the third floor rally at the Statehouse for House Bill 1427, and take a stand against the Common Core State Standards initiative. The Rally will be held at 1 p.m. We would like to see several hundred participants there.

2. Call and email your representative and give him or her this message in your own words:

“Please support House Bill 1427. This bill would delay the implementation of the Common Core State Standards until a legislative study committee reports on the cost and impact to Indiana. I believe that Hoosiers need to determine the educational standards of our state and not blindly follow the Common Core State Standards initiative. Please vote in favor of House Bill 1427.”

You can find the contact information for your state representative by going to our Legislative Toolbox and typing in your ZIP Code. You will find your representative’s contact information under the Indiana State Government heading. You can also call 800-382-9842 to reach your representative.

3. Call and email House Speaker Brian Bosma and give him this message in your own words:

“Please allow House Bill 1427 to be voted on. I believe that Hoosiers need to determine the educational standards of our state and not blindly follow the Common Core State Standards initiative. I hope you will vote in favor of House Bill 1427.”

Secondary Phone: (317) 232-9657

4. Contact Representative Rhonda Rhoads and thank her for supporting the review of the Common Core State Standards. You can contact Rhoads here:

House Bill 1427: (CCSS language begins at the bottom of page 8)

The Common Core State Standards initiative was aggressively touted by President Obama as a key part of his national educational plan. Each state has received significant pressure from the federal government to adopt the Common Core State Standards. States began implementing the Common Core State Standards after the Obama administration required their adoption as one of the criteria in determining which states would receive federal “Race to the Top” money. For more information on the CCSS, please read this recent article by HSLDA Director of Federal Relations Will Estrada.

In 2010 the State Board of Education voted to adopt Common Core State Standards initiative as Indiana’s new academic standards for kindergarten through 12th grade.

Please act now in support of House Bill 1427. Thank you for your stand for Hoosier control of Indiana educational standards and for freedom!

Please feel free to forward to others who may be interested in educational freedom in Indiana.
