Announcing HSLDA's Essay Contest for Home Schoolers

2002 Essay Contest Begins!

Home school writers, your time has come! HSLDA has chosen the topics for our essay contest, so fire up the word processor and get started. Below you will find contest rules.

Rules for Essay Contest


  • Category 1: Who is one of your heroes and why? (fictional characters excluded)
  • Category 2: Why is home schooling good for America?
Entrant Qualifications:
  • Category 1: HSLDA members who are at least 12 but will not be 16 as of June 1, 2002.
  • Category 2: HSLDA members who are at least 16 but will not be 19 as of June 1, 2002.
  • Only one entry per student.
  • Family members of Home School Legal Defense Association employees, the Home School Foundation employees, or Patrick Henry College staff or faculty are not eligible to participate.


  • Essays must be completely the work of the student entering the contest. No involvement or assistance of other parties, including but not limited to brainstorming, editing, or proof reading, is permissible.
  • Essays cannot be longer than 700 words.
  • All essays must be typed double-space on white unlined paper in a normal font no smaller than 10 point type.
  • The student's HSLDA membership number should be typed or written on each page. If more than one student from a family is participating in the same Category, the number should be followed by a letter to distinguish it from the other students. Example: 1011234A and 1011234B.
  • The student's full name, date of birth, and HSLDA membership number should be on a separate sheet of paper attached by a paperclip to the essay.


  • Essays should be mailed to:

  • Essays must be postmarked on or before May 31, 2002.
  • Essays from students in the same family may be mailed in the same envelope.

Please enclose a $10 check with each essay. The check should be made payable to "HSLDA" with a note of "Essay Contest" in the memo line.


  • Essays will be evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by Home School Legal Defense Association.
  • Essays will be judged on originality of thought, logic, clarity, writing style, and content.
  • Results of the contest will be released on Monday, July 15, 2002.

Note: Both categories receive the same amount of prize money.
First: $500; Second: $250; Third: $100.

  • Only essays sent to the above address will qualify for the contest.
  • No plagiarized or non-original work will be considered.
  • All entries must be postmarked by May 31, 2002 to be considered.
  • By submitting an essay you:
    • grant Home School Legal Defense Association the right to publish all or part of your submission.
    • agree to all rules and the decisions of the judges and sponsors.
  • Home School Legal Defense Association is not responsible for any lost, damaged, misdirected, delayed, mutilated, incomplete, illegible, or postage-due entries or mail.
  • All profits from this contest will go to the Home School Foundation's Special Needs Children Fund.
