California District Returns "Tardy" Affidavits

Home School Legal Defense Association has recently reported on a number of problems related to private school affidavits in California. For instance, a problem with the state's printing contractor caused a delay in the forms' availability. Because of this delay, the California Department of Education promised that any private school affidavits arriving after the October 15 limit would be routinely accepted.

However, we have now received reports from member families in San Bernardino County that county officials are returning private school affidavits to anyone who has filed after the October 15 deadline.

Therefore, HSLDA recommends to our member families that only those home schoolers in San Bernardino County who have missed this deadline or whose affidavits were returned should file their private school affidavit directly with the state department of education at:

Private Schools Office
Policy & Program Coordination Unit
California Department of Education
721 Capitol Mall, 2nd Floor
Sacramento, CA 95814-4785

Please be sure to keep the copy designated for the private school, and mail the other copies via certified mail/return receipt. Also, be sure to keep the receipt with your private school affidavit when you receive it back from the post office. Member families who experience any difficulties with the department of education should contact HSLDA's office immediately.
