Rhode Island: HSLDA Prevents School District from Imposing Unauthorized Testing

A Tiverton-area member family received a letter from a guidance counselor informing them that their child was scheduled take the Rhode Island Writing Assessment for the year 2001 at the public school. The letter set up the time for the child to come in, instructions and procedures for testing, and the time the child could be picked up.

Since home schooled students in Rhode Island are not required to take a writing assessment, HSLDA immediately called the counselor to make sure that the school district was not trying to make the test mandatory. After a 20-minute discussion, she finally gave us her assurance that all future mailings would indicate that testing is available for home school families on a voluntary basis only.
