HSLDA and MATHCOUNTS Hold Productive Meeting
William A. Estrada, Esq.
Director of Federal Relations
August 20, 2010
Today, HSLDA staff and a homeschool MATHCOUNTS team coach from Walkersville, Maryland, met with the executive director and deputy director of MATHCOUNTS.
MATHCOUNTS is a foundation which supports the advancement of math in middle school and sponsors math competitions across the country.
All parties agreed the meeting was positive and helpful. HSLDA and the homeschool coach explained that the policy harmed many homeschool students and parents who had previously been involved in homeschool MATHCOUNTS teams.
At the same time, MATHCOUNTS explained that their recent change to the eligibility rules that prohibited homeschool teams from participating was not motivated by any bias against homeschoolers. MATHCOUNTS shared many of the problems they have faced and the dilemma the MATHCOUNTS board had in crafting a fair policy regarding homeschool participation in MATHCOUNTS competitions.
Possible short and long-term solutions were discussed and both sides committed to ongoing meetings that will include MATHCOUNTS, HSLDA, and members of the homeschool community to try to find a compromise for the future.
HSLDA is encouraged by MATHCOUNTS’ willingness to meet and to consider the valid concerns homeschoolers have raised. We look forward to working together with MATHCOUNTS and members of the homeschool community to find a workable long-term solution.
