This bill is identical to A2722.
This bill would give the Department of Education the power to create “guidelines” for public schools to use when determining whether an aspiring homeschool athlete could try out for a team. We would not expect those guidelines to be friendly to homeschool families. Since the guidelines would have the authority of state law behind them, we would expect them to be used against homeschool families in many contexts outside the area of sports, despite the language in the bill that attempts to limit their use.
We have asked the sponsors to amend the bill by striking the "guideline" language.
2/8/2016 Introduced in the Senate, Referred to Senate Education Committee
