LD 527: Outlaws Normal Spanking In Homeschool Families Who Operate As Recognized-For-Attendance-Purposes Private Schools
Sponsors:
Representative Maureen Terry
Summary:

This bill outlaws normal corporal punishment in public school, which makes sense, but also outlaws spanking in all types of private schools. Many Maine homeschool families operate by using the option known as “recognized for attendance purposes” private school. This bill would outlaw normal, loving spanking in those private schools, and a judge could construe this ban to apply to the entire home. We are seeking an amendment to the bill so that the prohibition would apply only to public schools and state-approved private schools.

HSLDA's Position:

Oppose unless amended.

Status:

This bill is dead.
