HB 1222: Allows Tax Deductions For Persons Who Donate To Organization That Contributes Toward Homeschool And Other Education Expenses
Sponsors:
Representative Jim Dotson (R) Senator Blake Johnson (R)
Summary:

This bill creates an education savings account plan that is privately funded, and encouraged by tax credits. This part of the bill creates no problems for homeschoolers and may end up helping some homeschool families financially, or at least those willing to test their child annually.

The “findings and intent” section of the bill makes some weak or even unhelpful statements about a parent’s right to choose the education his child will receive. While “findings” are not “law” in the usual sense, they can set a tone or atmosphere which can be influential in unexpected ways. It would therefore be highly desirable to changes the “findings” section in this otherwise desirable bill.

This bill died in committee.
