Senate Bill 1018: The "Government Nanny" Bill
Senator Ken Pruitt
S.B. 1018 would have created a new big government program called "Learning Gateway," to "provide systematic hospital visits or home visits by trained staff to new mothers."
The purpose of S.B. 1018 was to "screen" children from birth to age 9 for "biological, environmental, and behavioral risks," and "learning problems." Further, Learning Gateway providers would have conducted "intake with families" and "needs/strength-based assessments of families," and "ma[de] referrals for needed services" and "developmental monitoring."
This would all have been done in "collaboration" with the Florida Department of Children and Family Services and numerous other big government agencies and programs.
Governor Jeb Bush vetoed S.B. 1018 on May 31, 2001. To read Governor Bush's veto message click here: http://www.myflorida.com/myflorida/government/laws/2001legislation/pdfs/veto_1018.pdf.
No action required at this time. Thank you for your many phone calls to the governor urging him to veto S.B. 1018.
