Blind mother fights for right to home school
Filed: March 24, 2001, Mobile County.
Nature of Case: On February 12, 2001, Mr. & Mrs. C. withdrew their children from public school and enrolled them in a registered umbrella school. Nevertheless, more than a month later, the Mobile County School Board filed a petition charging them with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor for failing to see that their children "attend school regularly." A preliminary hearing was set for April 16, 2001. HSLDA provided the juvenile intake officer with evidence of the family's enrollment in a private umbrella school. He then agreed to dismiss the case and obviate the family's appearance at the preliminary hearing.
