The daughter of an Illinois HSLDA member applied to enroll at The Salon Professional Academy in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The financial aid administrator said that her high school diploma was not enough. He said, “If you did not submit something to the state, then it is likely you are not recognized as being a high school graduate with the State of Wisconsin.”

The family contacted HSLDA for help. HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott A. Woodruff wrote to the financial aid administrator. He explained to him that homeschools in Illinois are treated as private schools. Woodruff added that the state of Illinois does not require private schools to file anything at all. He said the family’s home-based private school fully complied with all applicable Illinois law.

A few days later the financial aid administrator accepted the young woman’s diploma and cleared her for admission to the academy.
