City of Salem Withdraws Test Demand

In June 2004, the Howard family (not real name) in the City of Salem filed to teach their children under Virginia's certified tutor statute. Mrs. Howard has a Virginia teaching license.

At the end of the school year, the Director of Student Services told Mrs. Howard that she would need to send her children's standardized test scores to the school district.

Mrs. Howard called HSLDA for assistance. We immediately wrote to the Director of Student Services and explained that families under the certified tutor option are not required to submit standardized test scores.

He wrote back, acknowledged we were correct, and assured us he would not ask the family for test scores again.
