Suffolk County Retreats from Religious Exemption "Update" Demand

In July, the Administrative Secretary for Suffolk County public schools demanded that an HSLDA member family, homeschooling under Virginia's religious exemption statute, file an "update" to their exemption. The school system had previously demanded "updates" from other religious exemption families.

We called the Administrative Secretary and explained that families are not required to "update" their religious exemption, annually or otherwise. Annual filing is necessary for families who file the notice of intent, but not for those who operate under the religious exemption. She acknowledged our explanation, and promised that the school system would no longer demand religious exemption updates.
