Community College Reinstates Homeschooler’s Federal Financial Aid

One of our member families in Texas contacted the Home School Legal Defense Association after trying to apply for federal financial aid through Austin Community College. The family told HSLDA that college officials had said their daughter was ineligible for the aid due to the fact she was a homeschool graduate!

HSLDA immediately drafted a letter to the college explaining that homeschool graduates are just as eligible as public or private school graduates for federal financial aid. The letter included supporting documentation to clarify that the federal financial aid regulation states that homeschoolers are eligible.

In less than a week, HSLDA received a response to their letter from Austin Community College. The college thanked HSLDA for clarifying the regulation and assured both HSLDA and the student that the aid would be granted. In addition, the college explained in their letter that another homeschool student who had applied for the aid would now be eligible as well!
