On September 29, a representative of the Clifton, New Jersey, Public Schools sent a letter to the Velazquez family saying, “If you wish to continue to home school for the 2006-2007 school year, please forward a written letter of intent to my attention by October 10.” The family promptly sent the letter to Home School Legal Defense Association for guidance. HSDLA Attorney Scott Woodruff wrote and then called the official and explained that a “letter of intent” is not required under New Jersey law. The official quickly acknowledged this to be correct and assured us he would not request a “letter of intent” again, or imply that this is a requirement in order to homeschool lawfully. Our thanks go to this vigilant HSLDA member family whose quick response will help protect homeschool freedom in New Jersey. |
