School Unlawfully Requests Immunization Records

Pat Serafin, school nurse for Pittsfield Middle High School, has sent a letter to some homeschooling parents in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, asking for copies of their children’s immunization records. The letter states, “It is the responsibility of the school nurse to maintain health records on all students enrolled in the Pittsfield School system. This does include all homeschooled students.”

HSLDA Attorney Michael Donnelly wrote to Ms. Serafin explaining that New Hampshire law does not require home educators to submit immunization records to their public school districts. While the school has not yet responded to that letter, there have been no further requests for homeschoolers’ immunization records.

HSLDA is always ready to help school districts understand and correctly apply homeschooling law. If your district is asking for something outside of the law, please let us know.
