Paperwork Simplification Bill Sent Back to Committee

House Bill 406, which would have simplified the annual homeschool notice, made excellent progress in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, but last-minute equivocation in the Senate prevented it from becoming law this year.

The House voted to relieve all homeschool families of the unnecessary burden of describing their curriculum every year. The Senate Education Committee, however, decided that first-time homeschool families should still be forced to complete this pointless exercise. There was an effort on the Senate floor to restore the House language, but it did not succeed.

The bill was referred back to the Senate Education Committee where they will consider it again in the next session. Filing curriculum information, scope and sequence, and a book list is unnecessary whether you are filing for your first or your tenth time. We hope the Senate Education Committee acknowledges the problem next year and recommends the House version of the bill for approval in the full Senate.
