D.W. was finishing up the senior year of his homeschool program when he applied for early admission to the Missouri Western State University nursing program. He met all the early admission requirements, but a representative told him he did not qualify because he was not in the top 20% of his class. Members of HSLDA, his family asked for help.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff wrote a letter to the representative who had denied D.W.’s early admission. He urged the representative to grant early admission to D.W. He also urged the school to change its overall early admission policy toward homeschoolers, since the class rank requirement was being applied in a way that would categorically exclude every homeschool applicant.

D.W.’s parents also continued to work with school officials. The school finally wrote D.W. offering him early admission to the spring 2014 nursing class. We are grateful for the turnaround in D.W.’s case, and will continue to urge the school to establish an equitable policy toward all homeschool early admission applicants.
