School District Seeks to be “Partners” with Homeschoolers

Brainerd Public School District in Minnesota recently invited local homeschool families to attend a forum. The district informed homeschoolers that the forum was meant to create dialogue as they “work toward becoming partners in building bridges” with homeschool families. The agenda included discussion of what the district is able to provide homeschoolers, the needs of homeschool parents, and an open forum.

This pleasant-sounding invitation is likely the result of good intentions. However, HSLDA has found that most homeschool families are not interested in becoming “partners” with the school district. While we do encourage families to seek a positive working relationship with public school officials, homeschoolers are under no obligation to attend meetings that are not required by law, such as this forum.

If you receive unwanted or intrusive contacts from your school district, HSLDA is pleased to be a resource to assist you in responding to them.
