Families Told to Fill out Forms or Face Truancy Charges

Recently, a few of our homeschool member families in the Kent School District area were contacted by officials and informed that if they did not fill out the enclosed “Declaration of Home Schooling” form, they may not be able to avoid “the possibility of [their] child being considered truant from school.”

As our Michigan homeschooling families probably already know, the law does not require any notification or registration by homeschoolers at any time throughout the school year. Our members promptly contacted the Home School Legal Defense Association shortly after hearing from the school district to ask for our assistance.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka sent letters to the Kent School District on behalf of these member families explaining why these families are not legally required to fill out the form. The school district accepted Klicka’s explanation and have not required anything since from these families.

For members contacted by the Kent County School District, please contact HSLDA immediately.
