School District Cancels Special Ed Meeting After Hearing from HSLDA

When an Illinois family decided to homeschool their special needs son, they informed the elementary school’s special education coordinator that they would no longer need services from the public school.

However, the special education department continued to contact the family about the boy’s IEP (individualized education plan), and even set up a meeting for the parents to attend. Unable to convince the school to cancel the meeting, the mother contacted Home School Legal Defense Association for help. HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka wrote a letter to the special education coordinator explaining that the parents had withdrawn their son from public school and were privately providing for all of his needs.

The family has not been contacted by the school since then.
