Homeschool Graduate Successfully Obtains NCAA Scholarship

The Clark (names changed to protect privacy) family homeschooled their son, Nat, in Seminole, Florida, where he graduated from high school and was accepted into college. An excellent athlete, Nat wanted to continue playing sports, but when he applied for a NCAA scholarship, he was told that his private school had to complete an extensive form.

The Clarks, HSLDA members, contacted Chris Klicka, HSLDA’s senior legal counsel, who then spoke with an NCAA representative. Klicka explained to the representative that Nat was mislabeled as a private school graduate, for he actually had been homeschooled under the cover of a private school.

The NCAA official quickly accepted the explanation and expedited Nat’s application through the system as a homeschooler. He used a process HSLDA helped establish several years ago to assist homeschool athletes in obtaining NCAA scholarships.

Nat was eventually granted a full scholarship to play tennis.
