Family Forced to Change School Districts

After an HSLDA member family recently moved into Douglas County they attempted to keep filing their annual notice of intent with the homeschool-friendly officials in their former district, the Lewis-Palmer School District. Their notice of intent was returned, however, with a note explaining that it must be filed with the district in which the family resided.

The family contacted HSLDA for advice, and Attorney Klicka sent a letter to Lewis-Palmer District on the family's behalf. Klicka explained that the Colorado law merely requires that the notice of intent be filed with a school district in the state. The wording of the statute makes it clear that the notification does not have to be filed with the school district of residence.
