Bill Would Require State Testing

On January 26, 2006, Senator Bobby Singleton (District 24) introduced a bill in the Alabama Legislature which would require all nonpublic school students to take and pass a high school graduation exam prior to graduation. This would include church school students who are taught at home by their parents in a home instruction program. It is uncertain whether students taught by private tutors would be included in the testing.

Designated as Senate Bill 360, this bill is presently in the Senate Committee on Finance and Taxation Education where it was referred after being introduced. Home School Legal Defense Association is working with Christian Home Education Fellowship of Alabama in monitoring any effort by the Committee to move this bill forward. So far, there is no indication this bill will make any progress through the Legislature.
