Bills Would Open Public School Activities

House Bill 20 and Senate Bill 312, companion bills, would permit students in private and church schools and those taught by a private tutor to participate in extracurricular activities at public school. Since all students receiving home instruction in Alabama are enrolled in church schools or taught by tutors, this bill would affect those desiring to participate in public school activities.

To be known as the Equal Access to Extracurricular Activities Act if passed, this legislation would permit children instructed by a private tutor to participate in such extracurricular activities as athletics, music, art, and drama. Students in private schools or church schools would be permitted to participate in these public school activities if the activity is not offered in the private school or church school attended by the student.

Home School Legal Defense Association takes a neutral position on this type of legislation.
