Homeschooling in New Zealand Compulsory attendance: 6-15 (inclusive) Legal status of homeschooling: Legal as long as homeschoolers file a statement of intent with the Ministry of Education in order to obtain a Certificate of Exemption from the compulsory attendance law. Number of Homeschoolers: The Ministry of Education website says there were 6473 homeschoolers from 3349 families as of July 2007 (the latest available data). Craig and Barbara Smith Phone Number: +64 (6) 357-4399 New Zealand Needs: 1. Paying off the improvements to the Foundation office is our first
priority at present. The Lord has been gracious in providing ongoing costs over the
years just when we’ve needed them. There are plenty of resource materials
here and a growing selection of items produced especially with the
Christian home educator in mind. 2. Our second wish item would be to get speakers in from overseas. With all
three of the previous tours, the speakers paid their own air fares and
the Home Education Foundation then gave them a holiday tour around New
Zealand like few tourists would ever have. They got to see the
incredible natural sights of this country as well as speak to many
groups of home educators and experience New Zealand hospitality up close and
personal. Selling of their books and products really helped each
speaker. The groups they spoke to were not big: 300 was the largest, in
Auckland, but the average would be around 25 or less. This has been a
consistent dynamic of the New Zealand home education community...they
do not come out in large numbers, mainly because no large numbers exist
in any one place. Numbers are just too small and the cultural attitudes
are too different to expect gratuities and stays in hotels all the way.
Just ask Diana Waring about the tour she and her family had from one end
of New Zealand to the other. And she revolutionized
the vision for what home education could do here for many of the
families who met her and heard her talks. |
