New Zealand Homeschool Leader’s Health Failing

Craig Smith, a key homeschool leader in New Zealand and longtime friend of HSLDA, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer. We are asking you to keep this pioneering homeschool family in your thoughts and prayers.

Craig’s wife Barbara wrote, “We appreciate all the prayers we can get. God has been so good to us thus far. He has allowed this to be as bad as it gets and even worse, yet he is answering all our prayers. We are thoroughly encouraged in Him and relying on Him. It is still very hard and there are still many tears. But He is sustaining us in His will.”

Please visit the New Zealand homeschool association’s website, Home Education Foundation, as well as Craig’s diary for updates from Craig and the family. In 2006, The Old Schoolhouse magazine featured an interview with the Smith family about their instrumental role in starting the homeschool movement in New Zealand. The Smiths have been an example to homeschoolers everywhere and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time. Read the interview to meet Craig, Barbara, and their 8 children (Genevieve, married; Zack, married; Alanson, 27; Charmagne, 24; Jeremiah, 19; Jedediah, 13; Kaitlyn, 10; and Grace, 5).
