Homeschooling Expands “Down Under” Homeschooling: Don't 'Fix' What Isn't Broken Homeschoolers in Uproar About New Restrictive Education Act Australia Has Its Own Homeschool Legal Defense Association Update on Home Education in Australia Across the States of Australia Australian Christian Academy Supports Homeschooling Compulsory Attendance Ages: 6-15 Legal Status: In Australia there are six states and two territories, each having its own Education Act. The Commonwealth Government also has its own legislative requirements. Regarding homeschoolers: All state governments seek to register homeschooled children and to monitor their academic work. Regarding schools of distance education: All states have government schools of distance education. The states of Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia have non-government schools of distance education. Number of Homeschoolers: (Both home school and schools of distance education) This figure is difficult to determine as not all homeschooled children are registered with their state educational authority. There are approximately 20,000 home educating families. The Australian Christian College (formerly the Australian Christian Academy) has over 1,700 families, with 4,000 students ranging from Preschool to Year 12 in its home education programs.
