Research Papers

We recently wrote a newsletter on teaching research skills, and two readers suggested the following resources. Total Language Plus’s Pride and Prejudice study guide leads the student through the research paper process. The Lukeion Project offers a 6 week College Research Writing Seminar for the advanced high schooler that prepares students for papers required by college professors.

Biblical Worldview Elective

As you design your high school program, don’t forget to consider a biblical worldview elective course.  We have resources on our high school website which can provide the foundation for developing a course that will serve your teen well, and prepare him for whatever post-high school plans he may have.

Career Resources

If your teen could use some help in investigating various careers, check out some helpful resources. In addition, Gene Veith’s book, God at Work:  Your Christian Vocation in All of Life, will provide good discussion for considering the spiritual aspects of calling and career.

Youth Transition Network (YTN)

If you have a high school graduate moving from your home to college, a career, or the military, Youth Transition Network is worth investigating. This network will help to provide a healthy transition by connecting your teen with a Christian ministry. Having a group to associate with will lessen your youth’s feelings of loneliness and will provide accountability and encouragement in this new season of life.

Find out at TARC’s website how to build a team to produce rockets. Placing in the top18 teams at Team America Rocketry Challenge held in Virginia each year can then qualify your child’s team for participation in the Student Launch Initiative sponsored by NASA.

A Time to Laugh

If you need a chuckle, we suggest you read Todd Wilson’s book, Help! I’m Married to a Homeschooling Mom.  Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take a lighthearted look at the serious business of homeschooling.  Todd helps you do this while providing familiar examples to which we all can relate.  As the subtitle relates (Showing Dads How to Meet the Needs of Their Homeschooling Wives), the book’s ultimate aim is encouragement.

Additional Tips for Letters of Recommendation

Many colleges require incoming freshman applicants to submit two letters of recommendation.  Although a homeschool parent may choose to write a letter of recommendation, in some cases colleges will require the letters of recommendation be written by someone other than a parent.  For this reason, taking a couple of outside classes at some point during your teen’s high school years will give you good sources for these letters.  Be sure to give the letter writer plenty of lead time (at least 2 – 3 weeks) and choose someone who knows your teen’s academic abilities well.  Follow the college’s instructions regarding the letter of recommendation process.   Tips for your teen and the letter writer may be found on the College Board website.  http://www.collegeboard.com/parents/apply/college-applications/21360.html and http://professionals.collegeboard.com/guidance/applications/teacher-tips
