Dear Michigan Members and Friends,
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has opened a two-week public comment window on what assessment will be used for Michigan schools. The MDE has been looking at using the Common Core-aligned tests, which would be a step in the direction of implementing Common Core in Michigan. HSLDA opposes the Common Core because of its potentially negative impact on homeschools along with other concerns detailed here.
As part of the public comment period, the MDE is holding a public hearing to take testimony on the implementation of the new Common Core assessments on Wednesday, July 30! We are asking our members and friends to participate in the public comment period by providing feedback in opposition to the Common Core through email and by attending the hearing to speak against the Common Core assessment.
Common Core opponents in Michigan are concerned that that the MDE might simply adopt the SBAC questions and call the test the “new MEAP” test, possibly deceiving parents about the nature of the test and its alignment with the Common Core.
For more information about the hearing, please see the MDE website.
Attend the public hearing on Wednesday, July 20, at 9:00 a.m. at the Constitution Hall, 525 West Allegan, Lansing.
Testify at this hearing. We need our members and friends to speak against the Common Core and in favor of putting in place checks on the implementation of these nationalized standards and assessments. Even if you aren’t able to testify, your presence will send a message that Michigan citizens are concerned about the Common Core.
Provide written input using the following contact information:
