Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

This is a friendly reminder for those operating under New Mexico’s homeschool law that the annual notice of intent is due April 1. According to New Mexico law, homeschool families are required to annually notify the state superintendent that they are homeschooling within 30 days of establishing your homeschool program and by April 1 each year after. In future years this deadline will be pushed back to August 1.

This notice must include the name of the school district in which the family lives as well as your name, address, and name and age of each school age child you are educating at home. It is not necessary to actually notify your local school district that you are homeschooling.

The notice can be done on the New Mexico Public Education Department website or via mail. To file the notice online, click here and follow the directions. Please note that if you began homeschooling this school year and filed online for the 2013–2014 school year, you will need to file another notice for the 2014–2015 school year. Use the drop down menu to select the 2014–2015 school year option for the notice to be received by the Public Education Department for this upcoming school year.

If you choose to file your notice via mail, feel free to use our form (access for members only). In addition to our form, you can also use the printable PED form, or you can use CAPE’s form. The form can then be mailed to Public Education Department—Home School Division, 300 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe, NM 87501-2786. Be sure to indicate that the form is for the 2014–2015 school year in the appropriate blank.

Register now for 2014 CAPE-NM Convention—and save!

We also wanted to let you know that you have a few more days to save $15 when registering for the 2013 CAPE-NM Convention! If you register by April 7 you (and your spouse) can attend for $45 ($40 if you are a CAPE-NM member). After April 4 the price is $60 ($55 for CAPE-NM members). So register now, save some money, and enjoy a spectacular homeschool convention!

This year’s speakers include Ken Sande (Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom 360), Mark Hamby (Lamplighter Ministries), and Rachael Carman (Author of Soundbites from Heaven—What God Wants Us to Hear When We Talk to Our Kids and founder of Real Refreshment Retreats for homeschool moms).

Sincerely,

Thomas J. (Tj) Schmidt
