Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Your calls and emails are needed this afternoon to members of the Alabama House and Senate Education Committees asking them to vote in favor of House Bill 546 and Senate Bill 420, both of which are scheduled for hearings tomorrow.

The amended versions of these bills delete and change objectionable language that appeared in the original bills. They recognize that nonpublic schools, including church schools, may have both on-site and home programs. These schools will be required to notify the State Superintendent of their existence reach year, but the state will have no authority to regulate or license these schools. They would eliminate discrimination against nonpublic school graduates in college admission and admission to the Alabama Fire College or any police academy. No longer would a graduate of nonpublic high schools be required to take the GED for admission to public postsecondary institutions.

Senate Bill 420 is scheduled for hearing at 8:30 tomorrow morning, and House Bill 546 is to be heard at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. Members of the House Education Policy Committee and Senate Education Committee need to know that passage of these bills is important to homeschoolers.

Action Requested:

1. Please call and/or email as many members of the House Education Policy Committee as possible with this message or something similar in your own words:
