Legislature in Session Again
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
New legislative proposals are now beginning to stream in for the 2014 California legislative year, which began January 6.
Family Protection Ministries (FPM), in partnership with HSLDA, is daily monitoring every piece of legislation introduced or amended throughout this 2013-2014 two-year session, as we have done in the past. We identify and respond to any legislation that could affect private homeschooling or any associated parental rights.
HSLDA is privileged to provide a detailed legal analysis of every bill that is potentially threatening to private home education to FPM. After we (FPM and HSLDA) determine together the best strategic responses, we go into direct action and, as needed, we contact you for help in contacting your elected representatives.
It is critical that we continue to be as vigilant as ever in California. In recent elections, the Democrats won a two-thirds supermajority in the California Legislature. No party has had a two-thirds supermajority in both houses since 1933.
A two-thirds supermajority allows the majority party to raise taxes and make constitutional amendments without any minority party input. It also means that the governor’s vetoes can be overturned. While this seems like we have lost the checks and balances that a minority party normally provides, the reality is that Democrats do not always vote as a bloc. There are many different agendas, constituencies, and principles that affect the votes of individual legislators.
Although the growing liberal control in California can be discouraging and challenging, we are trusting that God will bless your prayers and support of our teamwork efforts to defend our home education freedoms from all attacks.
We are blessed to continue our work with good people like you and with Family Protection Ministries as they advocate for our freedoms on the front lines at the Capitol in Sacramento. God has blessed us beyond measure by giving us success in protecting private home education from unnecessary government intrusion in California for more than two decades. We greatly appreciate the support of each of you through your vigilance, prayers, action and your HSLDA membership and your financial support of Family Protection Ministries.
We continue to be firmly committed to working hard to preserve our God-given freedoms!
If you or someone you know is not a member of HSLDA, will you consider taking a moment today to join or recommend us? Your support for our work enables us to defend individual families and protect homeschooling freedom for all. Join now >>
