Action Needed Now to Protect Parental Freedom
Dear Colorado Members and Friends,
There are two bills being considered by the Colorado Legislature which would significantly impact the ability of parents to make important health care decisions for their children.
House Bill 1288 would make it more difficult for families to claim a personal exemption from immunizations. The bill requires that families “certify” that they are informed about immunizations before being able to claim an exemption. This regulation places a burdensome and unnecessary obstacle in front of parents exercising their fundamental right to make health care decisions. Parents should be trusted to make informed decisions without the government imposing unreasonable burdens.
Senate Bill 32 would restore the right of parents to choose a health care provider, including alternative health care practitioners, for their children at any age. This bill would address last year’s legislative action that imposed a completely unreasonable prohibition on the ability of parents to seek out alternative health care for their younger children.
For House Bill 1288, contact the House Health, Insurance and Environment Committee give members the following messages in your own words:
“I am calling to oppose House Bill 1288 which would require parents to receive a certification of knowledge before obtaining a personal belief exemption to immunization. Parents with personal objections to immunizations should not be interfered with in order to exercise their freedom to make appropriate medical decisions for their children. Parents can decide what is best for their families without burdensome government requirements or intervention like this. Please vote against HB 1288.”
You can contact the members of the committee using the following contact information:
Representative McCann, House Health Committee chair
Representative Schafer, House Health Committee vice chair
For Senate Bill 32, contact the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and give members the following messages in your own words:
“I am calling to support Senate Bill 32 which restores a parent’s ability to choose health care providers for their children. Parents have a fundamental right to make decisions concerning the care of their children. SB 32 allows parents to make these decisions and recognize their parental rights. Please vote in favor of SB 32.”
Please contact the following members of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee:
Senator Aguilar, Committee chair
Senator Newell, Committee vice chair
Thank you for all you do in defense of freedom for families in the great state of Colorado!
