Dear Illinois Members and Friends:

Thanks you to the 30 or so homeschoolers who came to the DeKalb City Council meeting last night. You made the difference!

After your huge turnout, the City Council voted to defer action on the proposed truancy ordinance until its September 23 meeting.

The school system was evidently confident that they could get this ordinance enacted quickly and did not send anyone to the meeting to offer testimony in support. After five homeschoolers gave excellent reasons to oppose the ordinance, no one on the City Council could figure out what was so urgent about the ordinance. After all, skipping school is not a new phenomenon, and it’s already against state law.

The proposed ordinance was only made public on Friday. HSLDA did not hear about it until Monday. When we sent out our e-lert, we were able to give folks literally just hours to prepare to oppose the ordinance. One alderman said after the meeting, “If [homeschoolers] can get this many people here in a few hours, imagine what they could do in a few weeks!”

Action Requested

This is still a very hot issue. We have won a postponement; we have not won the battle. If you live in DeKalb:

(1) Please call, email or visit with your alderman before September 23 and express your opposition to the ordinance. See our last e-lert for contact information and reasons to oppose the ordinance.

(2) Please attend the planned September 23 City Council meeting. Your presence will send a message. If you would like to speak, consider what you want to say and sign up on the information sheet as you enter the room.

Jeff Lewis with Illinois Christian Home Educators supplied us with information about what happened during last night’s meeting, for which we are grateful. We also deeply appreciate the work of other groups in getting the message out.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

Sincerely,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.,
Senior Counsel,

How Many Acorns Can a Chipmunk Hold in its Cheeks?

We don’t know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA’s payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities—their children. Don’t go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
