Dear Iowa Members:

On August 23, I sent a friendly letter to the homeschool coordinators in all 354 Iowa school districts reassuring them that they did not need to worry if they hear nothing at all from homeschool families they usually hear from this time of year. For the complete text of the letter, click here.

I explained that one of the main purposes of the new homeschool law was to reduce paperwork that school administrators and families must handle. I told the homeschool coordinators that families can be in complete compliance with the new law without filing anything at all—without even telling the school district they are going to operate under option 4 or 5. (Families who choose options 1, 2, or 3 will file a Form A)

If you choose option 4 or 5, it may feel strange to you that you can homeschool without filing anything at the beginning of the year. Just go ahead and enjoy your new freedom!

Because of the letter HSLDA sent out, school districts know they will hear nothing at all from option 4 or 5 families. Hopefully school districts will enjoy having less paperwork to file!

If you think you are in an unusual situation that makes it worthwhile for you to tell the school system you are choosing option 4 or 5 even though it is not legally mandated, feel free to call and discuss it with us.

(For an explanation of the options, click on the letter above or click here.)

Sincerely,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.,
Senior Counsel,

Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances...

Most homeschools don’t need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you’ll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it’s obvious that we don’t need someone “making-over” our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we’re fine as we are…thank you!
