Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

The 2013 Session of South Dakota Legislature adjourned on March 25.

During this session, HSLDA, working in partnership with South Dakota Christian Home Educators (SDCHE), was on the alert for bills that could have affected homeschooling, your parental rights, and your educational freedoms.

Excellent progress was achieved toward obtaining fair access to the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship Program. Representative Lance Russell sponsored HB 1128 which would have given homeschool graduates with an ACT score of 24 access to the program.

The bill moved strongly through the House of Representatives, but a “nay” vote by four senators on the Senate Education Committee brought the bill to a standstill for the session.

It will take more time and effort before we achieve our goal of fair access to this scholarship program. We look forward to working alongside our South Dakota member families and SDCHE toward this goal.

It has been a privilege to serve you through protecting homeschooling freedoms in South Dakota during the 2013 legislative session!

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

Sincerely,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.,
Senior Counsel, HSLDA
