Vermont Legislature Adjourned

Homeschooling in Vermont

Thank you for defending parental rights.

Staff Attorney Peter K. Kamakawiwoole, Jr. answers questions and assists members with legal issues in your state.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

The Vermont Legislature adjourned this month on May 14, 2013. During this first half of the 2013-2014 legislative session, HSLDA was on the alert for bills that had the potential to affect homeschooling, your parental rights, and your educational freedoms.

Thankfully, the Vermont Legislature passed no laws that would threaten homeschool freedoms or significantly change the homeschool law.

Senate Bill 42 would have added computer science to the minimum course of study in every grade level, changing the required curriculum not only for public schools, but also for homeschool students. The House Education Committee never considered or voted on this bill.

House Bill 524 passed the legislature and made technical amendments to the education law, including the home study statute, with no substantive changes.

We will keep you updated next year as HSLDA monitors the second half of the 2013-2014 legislative session.

It has been a privilege to serve as your attorney protecting homeschooling freedoms in Vermont during the 2013 legislative year! Please do not hesitate to contact our office by phone at 540-338-5600 or by email at legalg@hslda.org if you have questions.

Who are the Nation’s Best Lobbyists?

We don’t know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA’s Federal Relations Department is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
